Inquisition of the Week: YouTube Tuesday

youtubemontage-copy.jpgLast week, with vacation on the brain, Bartoneus asked how you like to spend your vacation time. Most of you said that you would hibernate, which I suppose is cheaper than all the other options, unless you mean actually go somewhere to hibernate. Second place went to those of you who love roller coasters and amusement parks, where it is very difficult to sleep.

Over a year ago, I started posting a featured YouTube once every week related to the other content of our site. So far, I haven’t missed a day, though there were definitely some weeks that were pretty difficult to find one, and some weeks are stronger than others. The very first “official” one is the not very well received Olaf LotR voiceover, though I have gone back and added some earlier posts as containing YouTubes. (And while I try to stick to YouTubes because its embedded player gives me the least problems, I do include other types occasionally, including one Google Video that was nominated.)

So looking back on all the ones featured, I wanted to find out which one was the best YouTube of the year. I asked the staff which ones were their favorites, and looked back on the ones that got the most favorable comments. Taking both of those into account, I narrowed it down to five.

If you ever find a YouTube or other embeddable video that you find worthy, please send it to me. And hope you’ve enjoyed this year of YouTubes.

Review: "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay"

Title: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Author: Michael Chabon
Year of Publication: 2000
Genre: Fiction
Length: 656
Rating: 4/5 – Worth paying full price.

I was first clued in to the existence of “The Escapist” via a limited comic series written by Brian K. Vaughn. The story was good, but I knew I was missing something.

Then, upon a visit to my local library, I found a copy of Micheal Chabon’s novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Shelved right next to it were two follow-up comic collections: The Amazing Adventures of The Escapist volumes 1 & 2. At first, I mainly was reading through the novel to get to the comics. But I soon found myself engrossed in the Pulitzer Prize-winning story from start to finish.

Inq. of the Week: Comic Con

Iron Man Mk 1 Armor Courtesy NewsaramaLast week, we asked what you thought of a certain Boy Wizard, now that his tale has found an end. Edging out first place at the last minute are those of you who are so-so on both the books and movies. Second place were the superfans, which is pretty impressive.

Over the weekend, Comic Con happened in San Diego, and from all appearances, it seemed to have broken records by selling out nearly every day of the show. None of us here at Critical Hits could make it, but I did spend some free time pouring through the reports for news of interest. Comic Con has way outgrown just being a con for those who subscribe to comics, but an epicenter of our world of pop culture. Movies and TV related to comicy subjects get announced alongside plans by the big two of comic publishing.

So though we could not be there, there should be plenty of announcements to excite everyone. Here are a few particularly notable ones, and I’ll link to some info about each after the poll. (And if there’s any I missed that you want to see added, let me know in the comments.)

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Inq. of the Week: Comics

Ninjas!Dave asked everyone last week what you thought of Game Awards and it looks like the majority (26%) never even look at them, with the next largest group (23%) seeing awards sometimes but not caring who wins.  I fall mostly into the latter group as I never really care much who has won the award, but I definitely like Game Awards because it’s a great way for products to be recognized by the industry and to give something back to the creators who slave away on these things.

This week I’d love to know if you guys are reading comics these days, and if so what you tend to read.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Inq. of the Week: May the Dice be with you

robotchickenstarwars.jpgLast week, we asked what kind of gamer you classified yourself as. The top pick was Explorer/Achiever with 9 votes… possibly because it was the most positive of all the options. I know that most of you like to talk smack and just won’t admit it. Second place was my pick, the Dysfunctional Game Designer, which refers to those of us who play games just so we can say “I can do this better, dammit!”

I just finished watching the Robot Chicken Star Wars special, and man, was that great. (If you missed it, you can check out the whole thing online.) This month has been a blast for Star Wars geeks as Lucas seems to be giving more permission for others to use the characters to make their own parodies and whatnot (as can be evidenced by the many films on YouTube.) In case you didn’t know, it’s the 30th anniversary of New Hope coming out, which has meant lots of specials and new games coming out. Wizards has just released a new edition of their RPG, incorporating many changes to d20 that some believe are a preview of what’s to come in 4th edition D&D. Not only that, but two competing game giants are releasing Star Wars starship combat games: Wizards with the plastic minis, and WizKids with a Pirates-esque “3D game.”

Anyway, all of this had me getting nostalgic for the many Star Wars games that I’ve enjoyed throughout the years. There have been plenty of misses in the many, many licensed games out there for sure, but there’s lots of really fun games too. So, in our first multiple option poll…

What Star Wars games have you liked?

  • Rogue Squadron series (12%, 9 Votes)
  • Dark Forces or any of the Jedi Knight series (11%, 8 Votes)
  • Knights of the Old Republic (19%, 14 Votes)
  • Star Wars RPG (West End Games) (5%, 4 Votes)
  • Star Wars RPG (WotC/d20) (9%, 7 Votes)
  • Epic Duels (3%, 2 Votes)
  • Collectible Miniatures Game (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Lego Star Wars (11%, 8 Votes)
  • Galactic Battlegrounds OR Battlefront (8%, 6 Votes)
  • TIE Fighter/X-Wing series (14%, 10 Votes)
  • Another Star Wars game you haven't listed (5%, 4 Votes)
  • None of the above, you scruffy nerfherder (1%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 74

If you need info on any of these, please ask away, as I’ve played all of the above at least once! (Plus a number of other Star Wars games that I didn’t think needed their own entries, including the one time I played Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, and kicked ass… at a science fiction convention.)ackbar.jpg

A Comic Issue

Comic Store Shelf (of Doom!)Not too long ago The O lent me all of the Sin City graphic novels, as well as Wanted; I’ve read through the latter and half of the others so far and all they are doing is making me miss reading comic books every week.  I stopped last November because it got to the point where I was buying more than I was reading in any given week.  They would sit in a huge pile, unread, for a few weeks and it got to the point (with help from my lovely wife) where I realized this was exactly what I didn’t want to be doing.  Since then, I view it in many of the same ways I view World of Warcraft - there are too many things I dislike for me to go back to them anytime soon.

The comics industry as a whole has quite a few problems, all of which you may have heard before, but I feel the largest one is the fact that it just doesn’t make sense to buy weekly comics anymore.  The entire outfit is designed to screw the consumer and profit for the company, with the exception perhaps of smaller companies and Image.  I don’t want to relegate these things to simply DC and Marvel’s problems, but I would definitely venture so far as to say that they are the primary offenders.  A single comic book costs shy of $3 today, for that you get 22 pages of genuine down-home comic intermixed with an average of 9 or 10 pages of pure advertisement.  Since the old days of comics the material itself has gotten smaller in size, thinner in length, more diluted with clutter, and the price has continued to rise.  Most fans know all of this, yet they shrug it off or don’t ever really think about it because it is pretty clear that a lot of things have become more expensive, more people are involved, and more people need to make more money off of selling them.  I would forgive all of this if it weren’t for the stone cold truth that these companies are spending money producing thousands of comics every week that are for most intents and purposes garbage.

There is a sore lack of good stories in comics, not just today but in general.  Go pick up the current issue of Amazing Spider-Man and tell me if it’s not just an issue of Peter teaching, and maybe getting into his costume once to say a line or two?  If you want to find good stories, you almost always have to go to one-shots, limited series, or ask someone who’s filtered through all of the shite and can tell you which 2% of the ongoing series’ issues are actually worth something.  This phenomenon is possibly a result of the thinking that if a write actually comes up with a good story, it should be used in new or separate series, or if sales are particularly low an epic-crossover to remind people that they have the choice between 7 Spider-Man comics, 8 Batman ones, or 357 Superman on goings.  Am I the only person that thinks this not only spreads the content too thin, but also the creative talent, the consumer focus, demand, and most of all the money?  [Read the rest of this article]
