Watchmen…

…is to become Saturday morning cartoon… !?

Watchmen is a serious, serious bit of graphic novel, even with meta-powered individuals populating its story. Written by psychedelically charged soul-delver Alan Moore, it is a seminal piece of literature, and I might almost be excited to see them release a movie of it this week. But I can’t believe it’s going to be made into a saturday morning cartoon, for f’s sake.

I’m just kidding, just some dude taking a piss, but a quite good spoof if you have read it and watched cartoons as a child. If you haven’t? Well go do it. It’s at home. Scott has it. Borrow it from him.

Let me give my shout-out to Marc Nathan at Cards, Comics & Collectibles in Reisterstown, who turned me on to this and many other substantial pieces of graphic literature.

The World Ends With You

OR: Final Fantasy DJ

The World Ends With You proves yet another great game from monolithical Square Enix, who bring us the Final Fantasy games, quintessential playing for role-playing games (RPG). TWE brings a hip-hop attitude to a group of dead kids who need to pass a series of trials in some alternate universe in order to achieve Reincarnation, or something similar. Square always brings some pretty heady world-blowing content to their games, which I like very much. You know, in the belief that games can be a powerful storytelling medium same as graphic novels, books, and movies. CAN be, I said, and this has a lot going for it. The plot, character development (both in game play and in the story aspect) and dialog are all very satisfying. The game utilizes the DS’s dual-screen setup to divide gameplay into two frantic simultaneous battles, a touchscreen-based hack & slash against a button-press puzzle, and the more you can synchronize the two, the better off you are. That on top of staying in fashion by staying on top of the brand trends, leveling up a disgusting amount of materia pin powers, eating the right things… well its a pretty involved thing, as Square games tend to be. Freakin’ Awesome. If you’ve a DS, definite recommendation.

Review: Pan's Labrynth

Now this, this was a nice movie. Like Tim Burton only…. not cute in a creepy way. Billed as horror, well it had it’s moments. There was definitely some creep going on. There was some.. brutal, greusome moments. I had to hold milli’s head at parts and tell her when it’s over, while I was groaning and squirming in my seat. But then at times it was downright magical. Magical, I tell you.

This movie flips between the women caught in the Spanish Civil War (it’s in Spanish) and the repulsive tasks this girl has to accomplish to get away from it all and enter the Magical Kingdom. It ain’t disneyland. Dark and beautiful and magical, yet grounded and greuling and harsh like real life, this intense fairy tale doesn’t relent or give you time to regret anything that happens. Absolutely magninicent and gorgeous. Highly reccommended to see in the theatres for all the lovely scenery and shooting.

Some disgusting comic news from teh boingboing

Marvel Comics: stealing our language
Marvel Comics is continuing in its bid to steal the word “super-hero” from the public domain and put it in a lock-box to which it will control the key. Marvel and DC comics jointly filed a trademark on the word “super-hero.” They use this mark to legally harass indie comic companies that make competing comic books.A trademark’s enforceability hinges on whether the public is likely to associate a word or mark with a given company — in other words, when you hear the word “super-hero,” if you think “Marvel and DC,” then Marvel will be able to go on censoring and eliminating its competition.

POWERS: Psychotic

Powers Graphic Novel # 9: Collecting Volume 2 Issues 7-12

What can I say about Powers? It’s one of the best written comics I know of, or at least one of my favorites, and certainly the only currently ongoing comic I actively seek out.

alan moore interview

As I was getting thrown out of the store (“meh it’s 6pm and we’re closing.” gits) I saw an A3 (like 11×17 but foreign) local magazine featuring a long in depth interview with Alan Moore, the genius shaman of comic books- most notable movie translations for the illiterate: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, and the up and coming V: for Vendetta. Although I think his best work is the epic Watchmen.

BattleStar Galactica- Season 1

Fiending for my sci-fi junk, I shot up this remake of a childhood favorite. Granted it IS better than the original, but not so much so I’d recommend you running out and purchasing one of your own, even from a secondhand store such as I did. There are certainly moments of interest: the Armatage III-esque mating of man and machine, machines finding God, machines capable of greater humanity than humanity is sometimes. But none of these is treated in a newer, brighter light than what has been shone into these dark corridors of futurism before. It’s like Ghost in the Shell ‘s inane passes at philosophy. If I want to watch living sentient ships, I’d rather be on board Moya any day of the week. My classmate picked up Blade Runner for £5. Guess I’m the sucker.

Jimmy Corrigan- the Smartest Kid on Earth

I had read this before, but I wanted to read it again, and gee, didn’t I deserve a treat for finishing my schoolwork ahead of time? yes I did.
