Good review. I just reviewed this over at rpgmusings.com, and I agree with many of the points presented here. I don’t agree with all of them (especially the Seeker), but differences of opinion are good.

Simon: I believe we did read the same book, part of the difference in opinion might come from the concepts of “core book ” vs. “supplement” and the distinctions between the two in each edition of D&D and other RPG systems as well. For me the new classes (such as Battlemind, Psion, and Monk) were parts of the book that I loved even though I’d never see them as necessary to the “core” of D&D. Both the Monk and Psion could be argued to be core, but I know a large majority of people would throw Psion out of that group right away. For me, new classes like these is like seeing the coolest scenes of an awesome movie for the first time, or like Christmas all over again. I get very excited to try out new classes/rules in my game either as the DM or as a player in other games, so that influenced a lot of my review and my impressions on new 4E books in general.

Did we read the same book? I found the PHB3 a huge let down, the book should be a supplement not a core book. Now I did say it was total crap, just well very ordinary.
