@Michelle: I am pleased to be wrong! Though, from personal experience, it's a fight to stay inspired sometimes (Why do you think I write for blogs?). Hope you fare better.

Vanir: No, it won't effect us. The companies we are working with want applications that will enable their customers to do things like view bills, contact customer service, etc. (I'm being vague and in fact slightly misleading because of various NDAs -- sorry.) They are in no way cookie-cutter applications. The real question is, can I stay interested in the work or will it become indistinguishable from "working for the man"?

@Michelle: Sounds like this so-called "cookie-cutter" edict very much affects you, even though that's where the work is. The company I work for does client work with a built-in customer base too, albeit not on the iPhone, and I know well how touch-and-go this can be. Here's hoping they start treating you guys better, and business picks up.

Speaking as a struggling iPhone developer (as well as a D&D player -- I'm not a drive-by poster) I can tell you that my biggest concern is how to get my applications in front of potential customers. I don't have money for marketing, and as my colleague-in-crime likes to say "Finding our applications on the App Store is about as likely as finding a particular needle in a needle stack." Our existing apps have slipped from bringing in $2k+ per month to more like $300, and we can't continue like that.

So, my work has turned towards collaborating with companies to make free, custom applications that have a built-in customer base, and doing it for a fee.

@Tony: I think you're right about the 'cookie cutter' apps being primarily targeted, but there's nothing to keep Apple from just doing it to whoever they please. I'm especially upset by their willingness to yank apps they previously approved. It's just bad form.

@sirgeekelot: Congratulations on making a successful Card Analogy roll. :) You're quite right, the Android platform has a lot of catching up to do. But at least I can get apps from anywhere I damn well please on it. :)

What you are faced with here Vanir is the same problem you are faced with in the article you wrote before this one (about WoW TCG.)

iPhone = Magic the Gathering
Android = WoW TCG

With the iPhone, you may get mana screwed every now and then, but there are a ton of people playing it and it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The Android on the other hand has a better system but isn't as supported. It's future is uncertain and finding stores willing to sell expansions isn't as easy.

From what I heard, when Apple said they were cutting down on "cookie cutter" apps, they literally meant apps that could be thrown together using formulaic templates provided to people with no programming experience on various websites. This shouldn't affect actual talented programmers (such as yourself) who can create an app from "scratch".

I'm glad somebody else jumped on the c64 bandwagon almost as late as me. I bought mine in 1990 (their "Test Pilot" package), because I had a friend with a ton of games. I think it was the last year they were sold.....

My computer ownership chain:

Vic-20 (1985, 12 y.o.)
C-64 (1987, 14 y.o., bought used with my money)
Amiga 500 (1989, 16 y.o., new, with my money)
486 (1992, Undergrad Computer, student loan)
Pentium II (1995, Master's Degree box, student loan)

Then I forgot :)

As for the App story... I don't have an iPhone... yet. :) But I do remember how stinky those Shareware CDs were.

Apparently the hardware and even the Extended Color BASIC interpreter were very similar. There were kits to turn a CoCo into a Dragon. Sadly, it doesn't look like they could share the same software out of the box. Shame, I would love to talk Dino Wars with somebody. :) I found a lot of info about this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_32/64
