Nice piece Mike, but I will say I think you're a dick for posting two spoilers (assuming they're true) in the article preview blurb.

And I did find it useful, or I would not have bothered, and I agree with the comments you and Dave made, as well as agreeing with your characterization of 4e. All good with that. I obviously liked the idea behind the article, as well, or else I would not have clicked it in the first place.

I mentioned that my issue was not with 4e or other game-centric articles, it was when they don't have to be. There are plenty of times when an article that is more system specific (Character Concepts:DragonBorn comes to mind) and it should be.
It is Mike's article, and obviously Dave's site, and I should be clear and say that I appreciate the fact you do it and the level of quality you bring to it. But the gamer in me wishes that when the bias was not needed for the article, it could be minimized.

Thanks for listening, I'll keep reading.

There are plenty of advantages to focusing on one specific system too- as a primarily 4e DM, I look for advice that will help me with my game that I don't have to adapt, that can be used right out of the box. It's not about glossing over, it's about playing to strengths of a game.

Critical Hits will continue to serve 4e-specific articles alongside system-less articles... like this was published on the same day as Scott's excellent RPG article that is not D&D specific. So I recommend checking that out, and leaving a comment there if you enjoyed it.

4e is my game of choice so that's what I'm going to focus on. There's certainly no lack of articles on other systems or completely system agnostic articles out there on the internets. My stuff, however, is very likely to focus on 4e. If you find it useful for other games too, all the better!

I'm with Trevor, actually, and was thinking the same thing.
I almost stoped reading after, "This, of course, depends a lot on your desires as the dungeon master and the desires of your players, but, assuming you already play and enjoy 4th Edition, don’t worry too much about what the system lacks. Instead focus on what it does best – combat!"

I'd rather be upront about it and say that system-specific articles that don't have to be are a big turn off. This article was useful for almost any system. To paraphrase the article, We do live in interesting times. There are lots of different GMs running all sorts of typs of games, and by mentioning and using examples from only one you are merely excluding potential readers.

I'm going to disagree with Trevor. I like D&D centric. But even from a generic DMing point of view, I find these articles well done. Keep them coming.

I wish these posts were less D&D-centric.

"DMing tips from Mass Effect Blah blah"

has a much braoder appeal than

"How to use Mass Effect stuff to gloss over D&D's rough points"

How about mentioning major fan updates to older classics, like Planescape Torment?

If only we got a new Ultima Underworld ;|.

Awesome post - I really enjoyed your previous post about the "Dragon Age" DM Tips and although I've never played Mass Effect 2, I think you bring up some great DM'ing points. Great advice, and just goes to show that inspiration for better gaming can come from a variety of sources.
