I must say that splitting up into 2 different groups has worked remarkably well. There are almost always enough players to play, but only rarely is there too many. It is an innovative and practical solution to a difficult problem.

Graham: The "Word" healing powers can be used unlimited times during a short rest and taking the average. It's more a logistic/narrative thing than anything, rather than have to time out short rests to 5 minute breaks per healing surge used.

Executioner's axe is also the best weapon in the game so it has to have some penalty.

Oh come on Dave, go all the way to level 30 or at least plan to and if things come together happily at 28 or 29 then so be it, but don't plan on cutting it short just yet!

I think it's been great having the history of a world I mostly created built upon not only by another DM but also an entire group of players. I've promised (challenged?) The Main Event and E that no matter what they do my game in the future will be just fine. While we haven't really had any direct interactions so far, I think we're getting closer and closer to the point that some important things may happen between the different times.

TME: Yeah, it's a great houserule.

Raevhen: Yes, they've had 5 quest choices from after the very first adventure of Paragon tier, though they've been closed off at certain times until after they advance on another plotline. For example, they're currently looking for a certain magical substance for one quest line, which will also allow them to progress on a different quest.

It sounds like you've got the basics done fine. Just remember that you can do more than location based ties. Plot ties and character ties that encourage them to dabble in different quests are also important.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions about 5x5.

Micah: I stole pretty liberally from Dark Heresy and dropped it into D&D to make it one of the more defining portions of my setting. Punishing heretics is pretty important.

I usually think any weapon can be used to knock someone out with the handle, but because the weapon is called an "Executioner's Axe" I decided to make a silly rule.

I have to say, I have Dark Heresy fever now, and every time I hear "Inquisition" I get all excited that someone else is braving the Warhammer 40k universe to punish heretics and whatnot.

Still, it sounds like fun, and I wish you guys the best.

Oh, and if you're going to be a stickler on rules, can anyone explain to me how a flail or morningstar can do subdual either?

How did you weave together the 5x5 method? Did you give your players 5 'missions' to choose from and let them advance them as they see fit, or did you stagger the starting encounters?

I really like the idea of the 5x5 and am also planning to use it for my paragon level which will probably start around March and am doing the monkey work to try and do a basic plot line without being railroady. My idea was to have 1 main thread than the players are following and the others branch off with encounters that have similar locations so the players can say, "Well if we go to the Yaun-Ti city we can get both McGuffin 1 and kill BBEG 3."

I would love any advice or observations you can provide on the 5x5 method.

My inability to do subdual damage has [potentially] caused the failure of at least one quest so far!
