If I had the money I would buy a hardcover Maid: RPG. It's an amazing pick-up game (hell, it's an amazing game, in general) and I think everyone should have a copy at their table. Thankfully my laptop and I are stuck by the hip (in a scary technolovecraftian way, I'm a cyberbeast) so I always have my PDF on-hand.

Battletech simulator pods?! Gods, I used to play like a fiend when I lived in London. Great fun, but terrible graphics. I hope they are at Gen Con this year. I challenge all comers with my 10-year old combat skills!

Graham: They had a variety of Sultan tables of different heights and sizes. Not sure if any would fix your problem, but it would definitely work for me. And I could have tried the hats on, I just didn't get the chance.

David: Traitor tackles some of the sometimes less desirable aspects of Werewolf, like there's no moderator, and there's no one eliminated, so it's more of a party game where everyone gets to play. It's also very simple, but at the same time, can be quite intense trying to root out the traitor and evil wizard.

Mike: That's a shame about the dice, but I was using them last night at my game, and they were rolling really well... also looking forward to using them to play on Sunday. And for hundreds of dollars... well, that's what I would be spending to get set up enough with them to play :)

Luke: I dunno, but I hear he was crucial in a certain award win.

You CAN strafe in the BattleTech pods (if you are referring to torso twisting).

Also, these are running BattleTech: Firestorm, and that is based off of the MechWarrior 4: Mercs code. So its about 2003 vintage graphics.

Anyway...if you need someone to test out Wealth of Nations with you, give me a holler.

I've played those battletech pods with my dad, nine years ago.
They do not strafe.
It made a one-on-one battle, not so interesting.
You'd be better off finding a pair of Virtual-On cabinets.

This makes me drool for Gencon.

I've tried out the precision dice now for a little while and, overall, I haven't been happy with them. The ink on the inked ones wore off pretty quickly when rubbed with my finger. The flat sides of the dice weren't always flat (which made me question how precise they were) and they were pretty expensive. I ended up going back to my regular dice and I'm just as happy.

I just got two sets of the Realm of the Ancient sets from Dwarven Forge. It's not exactly hundreds of dollars a set - more like one hundred a set - still very expensive but it really makes the game more fun. I have never been disappointed with Dwarven Forge. The minute you put it on the table, you know where your money went.

Tomorrow I have to hit Target and buy 14 drawers to hold my DF collection, though. They weren't kidding when they call it "the addiction".

I like Wealth of Nations. It's a good abstract economic model, yet doesn't overwhelm me like Puerto Rico. Also, it's more forgiving.

Can you tell us more about Are You the Traitor? What makes it fun? How is it different from Werewolf?

This was my first time to Origins. Perhaps overall attendance was down and the were fewer exhibitors. But there was still more than I had time to see and still play games. And the Board Room upstairs was packed full. I understand that attendance there was up and that 1,200 ribbons were sold.

Good report, man. Lessee...

1) I have little interest in the Sultan table. It looks to be too high for RPGs, and too wide for a lot of board games. It looks great for wargaming, but I don't do any of that.

2) You think you have a problem buying hats? My head is literally not on the sizing charts in specialty hat shops! Though I would also be tempted by the hat store. Did they not let you try them on?

3) Is it just me, or do the battletech pods look like Hobbit-hole-themed port-a-pottys?

That Sultan Table made me cry. Never before have I experienced such nerd-related product lust. The $10,000 price tag sobered me up, a bit, though. Bonus points for the picture of the Aquire game in that picutre. (I do likes me some Acquire!)

As for the Battletech game, remember that this was 1996 era graphics, and it's not about cutting edge technology anymore, but more about nostolgia for some, and blowing stuff up for others. But I was quite dissapointed that you couldn't strafe in the mechs...

The con seemed smaller than in years past, but I guess the slowing ecomony had a lot to do with it. Nevertheless, I glad I made it out this year. maybe next year when I have two weeks of Vacation time, I'll make it out to Gen-Con.
