@Heather:
My housemate and I always fight over who gets to play the drums. I used to drum (sort of), so it’s sort of my preferred state (though I’m only just now starting to get up to Hard… I’m so out of practice.). I’m not sure what my housemate loves about them so much…

Also: We managed to break the kick pedal…
And one of the drum heads has a dent in it, but that’s all my housemate…

You know what a good advice would be? “Don’t play Hard mode with a controller.”

Not because it’s impossible (far from it if you’ve gone to finger gym lately) but because the little PS2 controller doesn’t like it that much… specially on songs that have you beating on the same button all the time (think ‘Barracuda’ on Guitar Hero 3.)

Now I have to buy myself another gamepad, those are $120 that I don’t want to spend.

The GH guitar works best as a guitar all over, but I do prefer the Rock Band guitar when playing Bass…it took me awhile to get the hand-foot coordination down to be able to play drums…I’m still on Medium there…

Like Vanir, I go both ways with the strum, though I spend a lot of time just punching down…

They only work during solos and big rock finishes. I don’t like the RB guitar either- I’m at my best when using my GH2 ExploDer.

I hate the RB guitar a lot. I’ve been using the GH3 les paul for pretty much everything.

@Graham: I had the same thought, but couldn’t figure how to make it one. Good job.

About difficulty: I’ve heard that switching from one to the other (GH vs RB) can be difficult for some people since the guitars are *just* different enough to cause some problems. I’ve heard, from a few people, that the GH guitar is easier, even if the songs are harder.

And the DLC does change it up a bit. Just don’t do what my housemate does and download (pretty much) every song. It somehow bogs the game down and makes the menus super wicked slow.

It’s been awhile since I’ve played, but I think I usually strum up. I’m also not very good.

I’ve heard the “Start on Medium” thing before, and it sounds like great advice. I’m sure I’d play better if I’d done that — maybe I could actually make it to Hard…

Guitar Hero as a game is entirely about the guitar (yes, I know it’s obvious), so it makes sense to have a certain level of difficulty in that. The issue with comparing it to RockBand is that you are no longer talking about a game entirely about the guitar, so naturally if you look at only the guitar portion it should be less complex and less complete on its own. What really needs to be looked at is the synergy between the guitar parts and the other instruments.

Some songs have insanely boring bass lines, while others have ridiculously hard bass. This bothers me because it requires prior knowledge of songs to really enjoy playing the game.

I must be your least coordinated reader, because I had to try a couple of times to make it through the first song on easy. Forget bad habits– I never would have continued playing long enough to finally “get it” if I’d started on Medium.

Expert on Rock Band can definitely be compared to Hard on some of GH’s higher tier tracks…though at times, Rock Band’s Medium surpasses that of GH…

Can play Expert on most songs, but Green Grass just causes far too much fatigue…

When I first started playing, a friend told me to start on Hard because it forces you to master the hard stuff early. I’m assuming he meant “orange notes”, because I have heard dozens of people, myself included, screech like a howler monkey the first time they hear one.

I’d say Yan’s right about the difficulty on RB being less, at least until you start getting into the DLC for the game. There is some seriously crazy hard stuff you can download, and it makes you feel just as frustrated as GH3. Yay!

I can play about 80% of stuff on expert (although usually barely hanging on) but I just can’t seem to finish off anything with too much southern rock in it like Free Bird or Green Grass and High Tides. Stupid triplets in rapid succession……

The difference in difficulty between GH and RB is pretty step… I have GH3 at home and I’m unable to finish a song at hard but in RB I play it at the same level with no problem except for a few songs…
