I did not take your advice and I watched the show. I got totally hooked to the characters and I am actually depressed that it is over. You really nailed it.

As a diehard bebop and and Firefly fan…. I command you to watch Trigun…. Just grin and bear out the first 4-6 episodes…. You will be glad you did. It moves to a very deep, epic story…..

I totally understand. I had a friend give me the series on DVD and I did the exact same thing. After months of having them, I finally watched it,got attached to the characters, ran out and rented the movie, and felt the bitterness only getting partial closure. I then called my freind the next day and asked what was he thinking…his response “misery loves company” ..not right…not right at all.

Thanks for this great post. I haven't seen Firefly and have been really hesitant to watch it, despite all my friends disowning me. But I've seen THEM watch it, and then break down in tears and get into hour-long rants about how they hate the world for making Firefly end. It's always been an internal battle I've had. Trigun is teh awesome as well.. Booze and guns?! cant beat it! But one of my favorite animes regardless. The story is awesome.

@Bartoneus: Trigun starts off as a comedy, yeah. It does develop into more, though, as the series goes on. But it would be very easy to underestimate based on the first 4-6 episodes or so. Scott's last post: Defining Roles

I’m totally with you on the heartbreak, kid.

I watched the series shortly before the movie came out, and the movie just didn’t “end” things well enough for me. I understand that Weadon probably wanted to leave things open enough for another run, but part of me knew the truth: this show is too quirky to establish enough of an income base to be picked up again.

So I needed it to end.

And Joss, in his typical style, smacked us with one Good Death and one meaningless (MEANINGLESS!) death, and lots of questions still unanswered.

Ah, well. That’s what I get for falling in love with a freakin’ goofy sci-fi western.

Speaking of Whedon, I’m not sure if this was put up here earlier, but he has a 3-episode show called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog that was free online for a week. I believe it’s available on iTunes now, so anyone else who has been caught in Whedon’s trap who hasn’t seen them yet will want to check it out. Nathan Filion (Captain Mal) plays a super-hero, and Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser) plays Dr. Horrible.

I have not watched Firefly. A friend of mine owns the DVDs and the movie, and has offered to let me borrow them. But I’m not sure if I want to watch them, for the very same reasons you mentioned. You see, I’m sure I’ll like the series. I loved Cowboy Bebop’s mix of science-fiction and western, and enjoyed Trigun as well (but not nearly as much as Cowboy Bebop). If I watch Firefly, I will like it, and I will lament its all too short run. Or how’s that saying? Better to have loved and lost yadda yadda…

And on a somewhat related note, I have been getting my wife into anime slowly. I have started with Hayao Miyazaki’s movies, all of which she has loved so far. The next step is Cowboy Bebop…

I’ve watched an episode or two of Trigun, and I have to say the silly is way off the charts vs. Bebop or anything else. Maybe I just didn’t give it enough time to get to the good stuff, but I thought the show was just a little too ridiculous to be put on the same level as these other shows.
