Well, that may be a wee bit harsh, but that is how upset we are...we mean no offense or insult.

I have a great idea...how about we swap, your 4thEd for our old 3-3.5 books that we already shelled out hundreds of dollars for? No? It is hard to believe that this isn't just for the money. I am an old-shcool DND player, been playing since before the d20 system, so forgive me if I'm not easily convinced. More books to buy? Please! Don't underestimate the power of a great GM! The GM is the one whom makes the game good, the source books shouldn't even matter! So, why am I pissed off(about buying books) when I should be excited(about new books)? It's because this is a process we've repeated too many times. Theres no real player love or loyalty from the creators, except the love of their coin purses.

Thanks, glad you liked it!

So has anything convinced you to get back into D&D with 4e?

Good review of the books here. I fully agree on the difference between stated and actual audience for the books.

Just to add my own take on the subject.

I do not play D&D. I have not played D&D for years (Immortals Boxed Set/Rules 'Cyclopedia were out when I moved on). I do buy the occasional book for inspiration for my own writing and game design. I also keep up on the game via the website and a handful of gaming blogs.

I bought both of these books. I found the insight into the design process very interesting. The fluff aspects, usually my favorite bits of a game, were less interesting to me. I like the changes that propose, but have a strong feeling of nostalgia for the old school cosmology.

So, guess that was just a long way of me saying "Yup, spot on review."

Scypher- I'd recommend checking out just Races and Classes then. Of the two, much more about game design. Or to really save money, read the first few chapters in the store... just the beginning has some great stuff in it.

Cool, I need to check these out. I love game design documents and I've been out of the loop on 4e developments so this seems right up my alley. On the other hand, I don't see myself spending $40 on curiosities with pretty art any time soon...

Definitely put off by the idea of paying $40 for content which isn't finalized, though I did flip through Worlds & Monsters today and the art does look superb!
