Inq. of the Week: Famous Dragons

TiamatOf course, the original Nintendo Entertainment System rules the day as most owned console, and indeed, the greatest. Playstation 2 came in second, with third being the original Playstation, and the Super Nintendo close behind. At the bottom end, nobody owned a Neo Geo (and you thought the PS3 was expensive.) Only one person admitted to owning a 32X (me), only one person admitted to owning an Atari Jaguar, and only one person owned a 3DO. I know someone who still has a 3DO, but that’s only because he used to program for it! Anyway, some really interesting results there.

The final round of the Real Ultimate Showdown is commencing, and it doesn’t look good for the wizards. The dragons had some tough matches, but made a snack out of all who challenged them. It was strange to me, however, that I could think of far more examples of wizards than I could of dragons. So I compiled a list of some of the more famous dragons, and placed them in a list to ask…

Who's your favorite dragon?

It was tougher than I thought to think of examples. Maybe there’s some big ones I forgot (and no, I didn’t forget to put the Sean Connery dragon in.) But clearly, dragons rock, but which one rocks hardest?

As far as Evil dragons go, a 5-headed dragon is preety darn cool. Voted for the queen of Dragons!

Oh and Bahamut: The Lawful Good D&D one or the Final Fantasy Summon?

  2. Bartoneus says:

I would say for this purpose consider all incarnations of Bahmmy, I personally have loved Tiamat since Final Fantasy 1 in the tower in the desert. Not sure exactly why.

Also, for last week’s inquisition I’d say it’s very interesting to look at the percentages, out of our readers:

    72% own an NES
    63% own a PS2
    60% own a regular Playstation
    58% own a Super Nintendo
46% own an N64 and Sega Genesis
    42% own an X-Box
    40% own a Nintendo Gamecube
    35% own an Atari 2600
    32% own an X-Box 360
    23% own a Nintendo Wii
    14% own a Dreamcast
    5% own a PS3 and Sega Saturn

Just thought it was interesting to view the results like that, rather then a “winner” type thing.

  3. TheMainEvent says:

    I prefer Tahkhisis of Krynn.

  4. Despite being an avid D&D player, Guitar Hero II has biased me in Strongbad’s favor…

  5. Wooglin says:

I would have voted for Pyrite, the dragon of Fizban. :)

  6. Phil says:

Tahkhisis of Krynn is Tiamat, she’s just stronger in Krynn than in Greyhawk I guess.

If you remember in the original Dragonlance Chronicles, the Dwarven name for Tahkhisis was actually an anagram for Tiamat. I don’t remember which, I read them 21 years ago, but my 13-year-old geeky mind found that so funny.

  7. The Game says:

In my mind, I lumped Tahkhisis and Tiamat together. I hadn’t remembered the Dwarven name pun though, that’s awesome!

And a vote for Bahamut is a vote for any Bahamut. I voted for him because he was my favorite summon in FF3.

  8. Tami says:

What about Saphira (sp?) from Eragon?

  9. The Game says:

That would be an “other dragon” vote.

  10. Bartoneus says:

What about a “too lame to count” vote? :D

  11. The Game says:

Your face would win that vote!

  12. steve says:

should replace Onyxia with Nefarian… He was way cooler imo. but hey thats just me…

all this talk about dragons makes me remember that cartoon movie I saw as a kid.. this guy who ran a game shop got sucked into some D&Dish world where he ended up possesing the body of a dragon.

Very Wizards like in animation but cant remember the name of the damn thing oh well

  13. steve says:

    oh and…

Your moms a fire breathing lizard who can eat knights whole…. BAM

  14. BugHunter says:

    Steve,

You refer to “Flight of Dragons” which has the dragon (other) I’m voting for: Gorbash.

The first dragon I can remember (from watching it as a kid), and has been my favorite ever since. I think Sir Oren Neville Smythe (from the same movie) might be my favorite knight too.

  15. DarthCthulhu says:

    Krankor!

Okay, so he’s more an ineffectual chicken-man than a dragon, per se, but the JDF pilot who engages his ship calls it a ‘black dragon’ before dying, so therefore I proclaim the right to call Krankor an ineffectual chicken-dragon-man!

  16. drscotto says:

” Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff’s gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee”

  17. F’ Fing Fang Foom…

    Aliens don’t count much…

  18. Dragon pants must be nice and toasty…

Didn’t mean any offense…just commenting on the lack of vote for the alliterary dragooon…

  19. Bartoneus says:

Wow, it’s like Fin Fang Foom has an emote for every situation!

  20. Aww…I spelt his name rong…

  21. The D says:

You forgot Neo Bahamut and Bahamut Zero.

  22. Bartoneus says:

They are included in the Bahmmy category, I believe. :P

  23. This of course includes Bahamut, from FF A+…

  24. OriginalSultan says:

Nobody has said anything about old Smaug. But he’s quietly racking up the votes. And rightfully so.

  25. Yea…he’s one of those contenders that rightfully deserves it…

    Most of them are…assuming they don’t alliterate…
    :D
