Inq. of the Week: May the Dice be with you

robotchickenstarwars.jpgLast week, we asked what kind of gamer you classified yourself as. The top pick was Explorer/Achiever with 9 votes… possibly because it was the most positive of all the options. I know that most of you like to talk smack and just won’t admit it. Second place was my pick, the Dysfunctional Game Designer, which refers to those of us who play games just so we can say “I can do this better, dammit!”

I just finished watching the Robot Chicken Star Wars special, and man, was that great. (If you missed it, you can check out the whole thing online.) This month has been a blast for Star Wars geeks as Lucas seems to be giving more permission for others to use the characters to make their own parodies and whatnot (as can be evidenced by the many films on YouTube.) In case you didn’t know, it’s the 30th anniversary of New Hope coming out, which has meant lots of specials and new games coming out. Wizards has just released a new edition of their RPG, incorporating many changes to d20 that some believe are a preview of what’s to come in 4th edition D&D. Not only that, but two competing game giants are releasing Star Wars starship combat games: Wizards with the plastic minis, and WizKids with a Pirates-esque “3D game.”

Anyway, all of this had me getting nostalgic for the many Star Wars games that I’ve enjoyed throughout the years. There have been plenty of misses in the many, many licensed games out there for sure, but there’s lots of really fun games too. So, in our first multiple option poll…

What Star Wars games have you liked?

  • Rogue Squadron series (12%, 9 Votes)
  • Dark Forces or any of the Jedi Knight series (11%, 8 Votes)
  • Knights of the Old Republic (19%, 14 Votes)
  • Star Wars RPG (West End Games) (5%, 4 Votes)
  • Star Wars RPG (WotC/d20) (9%, 7 Votes)
  • Epic Duels (3%, 2 Votes)
  • Collectible Miniatures Game (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Lego Star Wars (11%, 8 Votes)
  • Galactic Battlegrounds OR Battlefront (8%, 6 Votes)
  • TIE Fighter/X-Wing series (14%, 10 Votes)
  • Another Star Wars game you haven't listed (5%, 4 Votes)
  • None of the above, you scruffy nerfherder (1%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 74

If you need info on any of these, please ask away, as I’ve played all of the above at least once! (Plus a number of other Star Wars games that I didn’t think needed their own entries, including the one time I played Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, and kicked ass… at a science fiction convention.)ackbar.jpg

I feel like Shadows of the Empire should have it’s own entry, it’s not on the list right now but I also don’t consider it a part of any series.

Also, cool on the multiple voting thing.

I remember playing TIE fighter for hours and hours and hours… I wasnt happy till I got all the damn medals and kill counts I could muster.

Its really made me wish theyd release a new version, sleeker graphics and what not. I also loved the dark forces series. FPS + SW= win

  3. steve says:

oh and Lego Star Wars.. was LoLerskates

  4. Admiral Akbar says:

Your Tongue Cant Repell Flavor of That Magnitude!

  5. By Battlegrounds Series, do you mean Battlefront?

  6. Oh, maybe you mean Galactic Battlegrounds? If so, I must retract, as I’ve never played it. (I was thinking Battlegrounds meant Battlefront, but that was based on Battlefield. Ahhhh! Battlie Battlous Battle!)

  7. Gavin says:

yeah i thought you meant battlefront too… oops wrong vote :)

Definitely the only SW video game series i’ve enjoyed was Battlefront. Battlefront 2 was so much better than the original too (a rare thing for a sequal).

I suppose i should have liked Knights of the Old Republic.. but i didn’t. The game just fable’d me by underwhelming my expectations. Hell, any game that has AI allies get stuck in walls, or run randomly out of the battle screen during combat, or doesn’t allow you to target the bacta-incubators during it’s final boss fight is going to urk me…

  8. Original Sultan says:

Yeah, I also thought you meant Battlefront. So I retract my vote for ‘Battlegrounds’.

The Battlefront series and the X-wing/Tie Fighter series were definitely my favorite Star Wars game series. They are also some of my favorite all-time game series in general.

I also noted that you didn’t include the Star Wars CCG. Otherwise I would have voted for that too.

  9. The Game says:

Sorry about that. Made a decidedly unscientific tweak to those of you who voted incorrectly.

  10. The O says:

Which block should I click if I liked Shadows of the Empire? I liked it alot, but I’m not sure if it’s part of one of the listed series. Otherwise, should I just vote for one not listed?

  11. The Game says:

Shadows of the Empire is “Another Star Wars game you haven’t listed”

  12. Gavin says:

Have to agree with Original Sultan — aside from Halo 1, i think the most per-hour play i got out of my second xbox was with Battlefront 2. Hey, 4 player split screen co-op dog fights against a swarm of semi-okay AI opponents? ROCKS!

  13. joshx0rfz says:

Star Wars Empire at War was actually a pretty fun RTS.

  14. I must say…HK-47’s dialogue alone made KOTOR 1 and 2 worth it for me…

  15. It being my time and money…

  16. I are confuse…if Calculus taught me anything…then these percents definitely don’t add up…

  17. The Game says:

On these multiple-answer polls, the percentage is what percent of voters voted for that option, not the percent of votes among all votes. Hope that clears it up!

  18. Ah, yes…that makes sense…thanks, man…
