[...] This week’s inquisition is more of a follow-up to our Third Gift Guide that focused on Games. There are just too many games out these days, whether they’re videogames, boardgames, or tabletop RPGs, we here at Critical Hits can’t possibly play them all and much less know which ones out of each category are going to please everyone best. That’s why our guide stuck to boardgames, so here I would like to branch it out a bit: [...]

Totally agree on Settlers. It stayed off my list because there hasn't been anything new with the core game in the past year, though there has been a version called "Simply Catan" released that is supposed to be an even simpler version. For the same people who like Settlers I'd recommend moving them to Ticket to Ride. Another great gateway game, and once they've got Settlers done, it should be easy.

Acquire is a classic, and thanks to a version on my PDA one of my most played games, but unfortunately, it is once again out of print.

I know it has been out for a while, but good old Settlers of Catan is still one of the best, and my personal favorite. It's replay value is nearly limitless, and it appeals to gamers and non-gamers alike. In fact, I've introduced the game to about 20 people (mostly non-gamers) and every one of them liked it (and wanted to play more!).

As many have said on BGG, if you want to introduce Euro games to people who are only familiar with 'classic' American games, Settlers is one of the best games to start with, and makes an excellent transitionary game into other Euro games.

Another game (again been out for some time) that is worth mentioning is Acquire.
